DreamHost Goes Green
30 April 2007
I’ve recently been investigating “green” web hosting as I have some upcoming projects for which a more eco-friendly approach is appropriate. From “Carbon Offset Schemes” and “Renewable Energy Credits” right through to fully “Solar-Powered Data Centers” there’s quite a range of green hosting options out there, each with their own definition of just what “green” means.
Moveable Tabs
1 February 2007
I finally got round to upgrading to Firefox 2 this week and whilst there are lots of nice little improvements, there’s one thing that really stands out for me.
For sometime, I’ve longed to be able to shuffle around the order of my open tabs to try to group related tabs together. Firefox 2 allows me to do just that and you wouldn’t believe how happy its made me.
Easy IE Testing
29 January 2007
This is really an update to the IE7 Testing article, but its important enough to warrant a post on its own. I only discovered recently that multiple “vintage” IE versions are now available in one convenient installer package.
A Web Design Blast from the Past
7 December 2006
Clearing out some old junk to make way for the new arrival in our house, I stumbled across an old CD from Digit, a design publication, dating back to 1998. Whilst nothing spectacular in itself, it led me on a trip down memory lane that made me realise my first commercial web design work had in fact been several years earlier than I’d previously remembered.
.Mobi Muddles
26 September 2006
As I read through a BBC News article reporting that the new .mobi top level domain is now open for public registration, I have to admit that I didn’t feel any growing excitement about the “biggest shake-up in years” for the mobile web.
@media 2007
25 September 2006
A teaser site for @media 2007 has been launched, highlighting that the conference will now be spread across three continents: North America, Asia and Europe.
Web Standards Awards - Mission Accomplished?
2 August 2006
The Web Standards Awards site is a favourite haunt of mine when I’m in need of some inspiration or even if I just have a few spare minutes and want to check out some of the best sites that the web has to offer. However, on a recent visit, it quickly became apparent that there was something different going on.
In Praise of MAMP
25 July 2006
It’s been quite busy round here recently, so much so that there hasn’t been time to add new notes to the site for nearly a month. To break the silence, I just want to post a short note about MAMP, a packaged distribution of Apache, MySQL and PHP for Mac OSX.
Adventures in Google-land
23 May 2006
As any website owner will know, its often tempting to check up on how your site is performing with the major search engines. The results can bring dismay when you can’t find your site at all or joy when you discover you’ve moved up a whole three places.
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is often viewed as a “dark art”, filled with many ethical grey areas. We all know that there’s no magic formula for topping the search engine charts (and you should avoid any company that tries to tell you otherwise) but there are certain steps we can take to help the process along.
Matching Boxes
11 May 2006
Moving from table layouts to CSS-based layouts, we occassionally need to recreate the effect of boxes of content that remain the same size, even when they contain different amounts of text.
Using table cells for layout, its very easy to ensure that the two boxes will always exactly the same height as, no matter how much text is placed within each box, the height of the row expands to contain the content.
