How We Operate

A fan of Gomez for many years, I jumped at the chance to pre-order their new album “How We Operate” from the US. It arrived yesterday, nearly a full month before its UK release date of 5th June, and has been on heavy rotation on the iPod ever since.

Its probably their most “mainstream” album to date, more pop focused and not as rough around the edges as their albums of old, but I certainly wasn’t disappointed.

From the country twang of “See The World” to the upbeat “Girlshapedlovedrug” (which includes a very “Good Vibrations”-esque section) there’s plenty of catchy lyrics sing along to. “Hamoa Beach” could sit quite happily on any of the earlier albums without seeming out of place. “Cry On Demand” actually made me laugh out loud, but there’s still room for the slower, more reflective “Chasing Ghosts With Alcohol” and “Don’t Make Me Laugh”.

Overall, I’d say it is smoother, more polished perhaps, but its still the same quirky Gomez underneath.
